THANET North MP Sir Roger Gale sparked a social media storm after comparing gay marriage to incest.
The outspoken Tory veteran waded into the equal marriage debate with a defiant speech in the House of Commons opposing the idea of allowing same-sex marriages.
Sir Roger said: "If the government is serious about this, take it away, abolish the civil partnerships bill, abolish civil marriage, and create a civil union bill that applies to all people, irrespective of their sexuality or their relationships.
"That means brother and brothers, sisters and sisters and brothers and sisters as well. That would be a way forward. This is not."
Prime Minister David Cameron is looking to introduce new legislation to give equal rights to homosexual couples.
On Twitter, Adam White (@weredogs) said: "Roger Gale taking the offensive route and the ridiculous logic leap and suggesting that this bill may as well legalise incest. How mature."
Neil Fawcett (@neilfawcett) said: "Roger Gale MP supports traditional marriage but has been married three times! Didn't they redefine marriage once to allow that?"
Tom Flynn (@DrTomFlynn) said: "I will personally commit money to supporting the campaign against Roger Gale at the next general election."
John Cooper (@cooper_jc) said: "Thrice married Sir #RogerGale has just compared #EqualMarriage to incest! You couldn't make it up if you tried."
