NOW, what did you expect from The Vaccines?

Well, exactly this actually.

There were no surprises at the Winter Gardens last Wednesday when the indie four piece stepped on stage to open their 2013 Come of Age tour.

The band has made a name for themselves over the last two years, releasing a pair of top five albums, as well as a number of toe-tappers.

So when they opened with No Hope, you knew you were in for a lively evening. And it most certainly was.

While many were enjoying the riffs of Wetsuit, Wrecking Bar (Ra Ra Ra) and Teenage Icon, others took to moshing like there was no tomorrow, making it a bit uncomfortable for the older rocker.

Thus, from a different vantage point, we took in their biggest and most recognisable song.

While most of the songs were performed in the same style as you would hear on the LPs, Post Break-Up Sex had a lighter and more reflective tone to it.

Apart from lead singer Justin Young asking the packed out Winter Gardens to sing along because he had a sore throat, there was a disappointing amount of interaction throughout the night.

But in true Vaccines fashion, they let the music do the talking, ending the main chunk of the concert with If You Wanna and the superb Family Friend.

This was a solid performance by the band, and even the introduction of new song Melody Calling and a cover of Wreckless Eric’s Whole Wide World did not manage to disrupt the flow.

More or less every song was guaranteed a sing-a-long from the crowd, a little groove from the band, and, sadly, more moshing.

Before rounding off, a special mention to support act Toy, who certainly knew how to play atmospheric build-up music.

The Vaccines headed to the o2 Arena in London the next day to play what was the biggest gig of their two year career, before supporting the Rolling Stones later this year.

And, it is fair to say their gig in Margate proved to be quite a warm-up for what could be their biggest year ever.
