Lab closes down after forty years in the town

FOUR staff have been made redundant at WA Turner's food laboratory in Tunbridge Wells.

The meat pie factory closed its food-testing laboratory in Broadwater Lane on Friday, July 22.

The laboratory carried out tests on all produce and checked hygiene standards.

Company spokesman Alistair MacDougall said: "The group is restructuring its internal laboratory services and unfortunately this has closed.

"We are grateful for the staff's service and we regret to make this decision."

The organisation has other plants located around the country and Mr MacDougall could not say at this stage where the lab services would relocate to.

"The restructure is ongoing and there are quite a large number of plants," he added.

WA Turner, which has 250 employees, is the UK's leading producer of sausages and savoury pies.

The site is split into two factories that operate seven days a week producing chilled and frozen products.

One of the factories specialises in savoury bakery products such as puff and shortcrust pies, suet puddings, savoury rolls and hot flans. The other factory produces chilled and frozen traditional British sausages.

It has produced food for more than 150 years and has been based in the town since 1970.

Anglo Beef Processors owns WA Turner and took the company over five years ago.
