Sloganistic: The new logo
BUS company Arriva has decked out one of its double-deckers with livery to support Medway Council's bid for city status.
The firm has paid an undisclosed sum to have the council's controversial logo daubed across its back end and the slogan "Supporting Medway's city bid" along its length.
The council hopes to win city status in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year.
The newly painted slogan follows the council's pledge to involve business in promoting the bid after being accused of being "premature" in slapping the "City of Medway – rich heritage, great future" logo on dustcarts before Her Majesty had made up her mind on which applicant would be successful.
It has since said waste firm Veolia should have made it clear it was only supporting the bid.
Arriva's publicity manager, Richard Lewis, said the company believed city status would be good for the area.
He said: "We are pleased to support Medway Council's bid for city status and we have sponsored the repaint of one of our double-deck buses to help create awareness of what the council is aiming to achieve."
Medway Council leader Cllr Rodney Chambers said the move was a positive step keeping to the brief that the council's bid should cost as little as possible.
It has put aside £25,000, of which half has already been spent.
Mr Chambers said: "I am very pleased that Arriva have shown their support for our city status bid by agreeing to promote it in such a prominent position on one of their double-decker buses."
Also in the running for city status are Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, Reading in Berkshire and Blackpool in Lancashire.
