Arriva bus painted with Medway city logo
Lovin' it: The Luton bus
BUS firm Arriva is promoting a rival bid for city status after also backing Medway to win the coveted title to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Arriva Shires & Essex and Arriva Southern Counties – two separate limited companies under the Arriva umbrella – have painted buses supporting bids by Luton and Medway councils.
The Luton bus is pink with the slogan 'Love Luton', while Medway's version is blue and has' City of Medway – rich heritage, great future' on its panels.
The company has said the promotions are entirely different and there is no conflict of interests.
Publicity manager Richard Lewis said: "We are free to use our advertising for each council to promote their bid.
"They are two separate limited companies serving two different areas."
Councillor Alan Jarrett said he was satisfied Arriva was keen to promote Medway.
He said: "It's a matter for Arriva. I am just glad they are supporting our bid here in Medway."
The council was accused of being premature over its rebranding of Medway as a city after it put the controversial logo on dustcarts at the end of last year.
It later blamed contractor Veolia which the council said had not made it clear it was in support of the bid, rather than an adoption of the city title.
Medway Council is, however, using the logo on some of its stationery.
